Sprint to expand/upgrade wireless broadband network

Last week Sprint announced an initiative to expand and upgrade its Sprint Power Vision broadband network. The expansion will allow Sprint to provide coverage to 190 million people nationwide and in Puerto Rico by the end of the year.

By the third quarter of 2007, Sprint hopes to further expand that coverage to 220 million people. As Sprint expands the network it will also be upgrading it to EV-DO Revision A technology starting in the first quarter of 2007. EV-DO Revision A technology promises downloads and uploads that are 10 times faster than current speeds.

The upgrade is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2007.Enhanced speeds mean that more multimedia-rich services can be provided, and the expansion and upgrade also provide a better infrastructure for businesses to transfer data back and forth to and from their mobile workforce. The first EV-DO Revision A-compatible connection cards are expected to be available in the third quarter of this year.
