Opera 9 beta now available for download.

The Opera web browser has been around for a long time and has often been at the forefront of new browsing features, yet it has been a perennial also-ran in the battle for browser market share. The browser was first released to the public in 1996 as a time-limited free trial, with the full version costing around US$30. In 2000, Opera 5 changed their business model slightly, offering a free download supported by in-line advertising as well as the commercial, ad-free version. Last September, Opera announced that starting with version 8.5, the company would be offering the desktop PC and Macintosh versions of its browser for free without advertising (it continues to charge for the mobile versions, used by many cell phone manufacturers).
