Lucent Takes on Microsoft Over Patent

Lucent, the well known networking giant, is suing Microsoft over an alleged breach of a patent it holds.

The dilemma is over patent number 5,227,878, which was issued to Lucent in July 1993 and called "Adaptive Coding and Decoding of Frames and Fields of Video."

The problem for Microsoft is that with the Xbox 360, they included MPEG2 technology, and Lucent is arguing that this violates the patent they hold.

While there is no news on a likely outcome, or what it might mean for the Xbox 360, chances are that a settlement will be reached out of court. If not, Lucent will be looking for a jury trial.
