The Future of the Xbox Live Marketplace

The Xbox Live Chief, Aaron Greenberg, recently appeared in VGM Daily's latest podcast where he talked about the future of Xbox Live, and more specifically the Xbox Live Marketplace.

  • 50% of Xbox 360 owners are connected to Xbox Live, and 85% of those users have downloaded content from the Marketplace.
  • The Marketplace has had more downloads than iTunes since its launch (over 10 million).
  • 80 high definition games will be available for the Xbox 360 by June.
  • Downloads of full movies through Xbox Live is not currently being planned.
  • There is a big update scheduled for Xbox Live by the end of Spring.
  • More information about the DirectTV partnership is coming soon.
  • Microsoft are thinking about getting game licenses from Rare, and hope to see games like Goldeneye coming to Live.
  • There is the possibility of a subsidised Xbox Live service through the use of advertisements in the interface.
