Blu-ray Production Costs

  • But in at least one early test, according to a top manufacturing executive who asked to remain anonymous, a manufacturing line for HD DVD discs produced nearly twice as many usable discs as a similar line pumping out the Blu-ray format, over the same period of time. That translates into higher costs for Blu-ray producers. Moreover, component costs for Blu-ray can be nearly double HD DVD costs, because elements are still hard to find, the executive said.

All this tells me one thing, DVD players will need to be replaced with Blu-Ray players which will cost a lot more. More over the price of HD DVD should come down when compared to Blu-Ray. We still don't know how Blu-Ray will do when launched with PS3.

Type of blog post

I came across this post, that has got me thinking. All of us are not experts in writing "atleast I am not", but I still make an effort to write something interesting for my readers. Darren Rowse the man behind Problogger gives you ways on how to make your blog post interesting.

Some of the tips:
  • Instructional - Instructional posts tell people how to do something. I find that my Tips posts are generally the ones that are among my most popular.
  • Informational - This is one of the more common blog post types where you simply give information on a topic. It could be a definition post or a longer explanation of some aspect.
  • Reviews - Another highly searched for term on the web is ‘review’ - I know every time I’m considering buying a new product that I head to Google and search for a review on it first.

99 Verdicts Against Wal-Mart

"Wal-Mart is sued two to five times each day somewhere in the United States. These cases involve slip-and-falls, falling merchandise, and false imprisonment/malicious prosecution." my take: Proving once again, that idiots shop at Wal-Mart. On the flip-side: I need to start hanging-out in the slippery aisles of Wal-Mart more often.

This compilation, 99 Verdicts Against Wal-Mart, is the first effort of the Wal-Mart Litigation Project. This collection of cases is the first of its kind - an attempt to publish a cross-section of plaintiff-favorable results against the nation's largest retailer.

Who Controls the Internet?

An interesting question, which makes you think. Is it the person who created this world wide web the controller or does the government play a role in controlling the Internet.

Here is your answer -

"Earlier this month, 15,000 heads of state, NGO do-gooders, businessmen, techies, and technocrats descended on Tunisia for the United Nations-sponsored World Summit on the Information Society. Delegates discussed the great digital divide separating rich and poor nations and sampled technologies like a $100 crank-powered laptop computer and a solar-powered e-mail terminal. But what hijacked the proceedings was the matter of who should administer the Internet—the United States or the United Nations."

How to Stick to Your Diet During the Holidays

Whether you are trying to lose weight, or simply maintain your current weight, the holiday season can present a particular challenge. These simple tips will help you stick to your eating plan during the holiday party season.
  1. Focus on the people, not the food. Remember that holiday parties and social functions are meant to be times to get together with friends and family. Get in the spirit of the holiday season by celebrating your personal relationships, and recognize that you're not just there for the food.
  2. Make the occasional party the exception to your diet or eating program, NOT the rule. Splurging once in a while is not generally a major problem. However, not returning to your diet the next day is a mistake. Don't let one or two holiday events be the excuse for falling off the wagon till New Year's!

Here is why -

Who wants an XBOX Core System? Not many. Plus: a FIX for crashes

In related news, the stories about the Xbox 360's stability problems keep piling up, but we're hearing from several readers that there is a fix. The culprit, or one of them at least, is the power supply. Apparently the power supply brick easily overheats, which in turn causes power line problems which render the box unstable.

7 things the Gmail Team is thankful for this year

  • Our families... 4 engagements, 7 weddings, 11 new babies, 1 reunion, and 1 cross-country move by a fiancée so they "don't have to do the long-distance thing anymore" so far this year.
  • Each other—the little family we've created here makes it fun to come in to work, especially on days when we play kickball.
  • Winning the "PC World World Class Award" for being #2 on the list of The 100 Best Products of 2005. (We don't mind being #2, especially to Firefox. Plus, it gives us more to work for.)
  • Google Video, and one fan's video we love in particular.
  • The horn of plenty and the guy who drew it.
  • You, our users. Yes you. Again. Still.
  • Cheese. Brie, goat, cheddar, the stuff we write on our home page... :)

Have Happy Thanksgiving

Wishing you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving.

Flush with higher incomes than other Americans, Connecticut shoppers are spending more on women's clothing than anyone else in the nation.
  • Connecticut was first among the 50 states in money spent annually on women's apparel--$975 per household on average in 2005--beating out larger states such as Massachusetts, New Jersey and California, according to MapInfo Corp., a Troy, N.Y., firm that provides software and research to retailers.
  • The numbers surprised Kristin Parenteau, a speech language pathologist who was shopping at Westfield Shoppingtown in Meriden recently. She said she spends nearly $4,000 a year on clothing.

10 things you should know about every Linux installation

Linux is an open-source clone of UNIX, a secure operating system (OS) that predates DOS and Windows and is designed for multiple users. The items in the following list generally apply to any UNIX-based *nix system, such as Linux and the various BSD's. For the purposes of this article, assume that it's all Linux.

Here are the 10 things to know:

Sony Rootkit DRM update

The Sony rootkit issue has been gaining a lot of heat, with new updates and malice releasing every day, and with a new round of law suits too. In addition to the on going steam about Sony's rootkit problem, there a latest update:

Sony installing a rootkit to hide its "XCP" DRM (digital rights management) software as installed on users' PCs. The DRM software isn't something a typical user would want; the "rights" it manages are Sony's rights, i.e. by preventing users from making copies of Sony music, and this protection for Sony comes at the cost of 1%-2% of CPU time

Having bungled this situation, Sony has recalled affected CDs and announced an exchange program to swap customers' affected CDs for XCP-free replacements. For savvy consumers who have followed this story, the exchange looks straightforward. But what about ordinary users, who don't read the technology press and aren't likely to learn their rights?

Folding Paper in Half 12 Times

Britney Gallivan has solved the Paper Folding Problem. This well known challenge was to fold paper in half more than seven or eight times, using paper of any size or shape.

The task was commonalty known to be impossible. Over the years the problem has been discussed by many people, including mathematicians and has been demonstrated to be impossible on TV.
  • For extra credit in a math class Britney was given the challenge to fold anything in half 12 times. After extensive experimentation, she folded a sheet of gold foil 12 times, breaking the record. This was using alternate directions of folding. But, the challenge was then redefined to fold a piece of paper. She studied the problem and was the first person to realize the basic cause for the limits.

The cause and function of hiccups has baffled medical practitioners since the time of Hippocrates. Although no one has figured out the exact science behind these "abrupt diaphragmatic contractions," we have come up with a few home remedies that might be able to help.

1. Swallow 1 tsp. white table sugar, dry. A study found that this stopped hiccups immediately in 19 out of 20 people. Repeat up to three more times at 2-minute intervals if necessary.

2. Gulp down a glass of water if the sugar doesn't work.

Color Scheme Chooser

The color scheme chooser (GX) is based on classic color theory pioneered by Johannes Itten in the mid 1900s. Johannes Itten developed a new kind of color wheel that changed the way color was seen. This wheel is still in use today.

This tool is based on the Johannes Itten wheel which uses yellow, red and blue as it's primary colors.

Red, yellow and blue are mixed to create the secondary colors.

  • Yellow and blue makes Green.
  • Yellow and red makes Orange.
  • Red and blue makes Violet.

Green, Orange and violet are secondary colors.

The six tertiary colors are made by combining the primary and secondary colors.
